On MacOS when you type CMD+N and the dialog opens to input a new appointment keyboard support is not great.

Should be possible to navigate by tabbing through the fields and using return key to close date popup and the dialog itself (or escape key to cancel).

Doesn’t work though  - only way I can find to close the dialog is to click outside it with the mouse.
